In this social media age, it's a good idea to know how best to use the various platforms to your advantage. Seeing as how all the social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc.) are inherently, well...social, they provide the perfect opportunity to connect with your audience and share up-to-the-minute news.

A prime example of this is using Facebook to promote an event. Since you already have a following that you know is interested in you/your company and the products and/or services which you provide, you can bet they'll also be interested in any event you're involved with as well.

Here's everything you'll need to know to successfully set up an event page and promote the event to your audience.

Creating an Event on a Personal Facebook Page

Login to your account. Click on the "Events" link in the left hand column under your image. (If "Events" is not listed in that column, click on "Edit Page." Next, click on "Apps" then "Events" and then "Go To App.")

Click on the "Create Event" button.

Fill in all of your event details. Uploading a photo that ties in to the event is highly recommended.

To promote your event, click on "Invite Guests." You will need to manually go through your list of friends to individually click each one that you'd like to invite. You can also add individual email addresses into the box below your friends list.

To further promote your event, post about it individually on your wall, with a link to the event page, and ask your friends to share it (by clicking the share button underneath your post) on their pages as well.

Creating an Event on a Business Facebook (aka Fan) Page

Follow steps 1 through 3 as illustrated above.

To promote your event, click on the "Share" button in the upper right hand corner. This pops up a dialogue box where you can type a message about your event. The link to the event page is already attached. When done typing your message, click "Share Event" and it will post to your wall.

Encourage your fans to share your event and to invite their own friends as well.

Remember, social media is NOT self-promotion media! Continue to promote your event, but do so in a genuine way while also interacting with your friends and fans about other things. Using Facebook as an event invitation tool is a great use of social media, just don't overdo it.
